THE JOB:

As a Starting Gate Driver, you are responsible for operating the mobile starting gate and ensuring the vehicle is properly fueled, cleaned, and maintained throughout racing meets.

THE DAY-TO-DAY:

  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date scratch information throughout the racing program and ensure the starting gate is race-ready, assisting the Starter in delivering a fair and safe start for all horses

  • Ensure the starting gate vehicle is consistently fueled, cleaned, and properly maintained during each racing meet

  • Promptly report operational issues, safety concerns, or equipment needs to the Race Secretary or Track Superintendent

  • Train and mentor backup starting gate drivers to ensure continuity and operational readiness

  • Foster positive employee relations and represent the department professionally with the public and racing participants

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

  • Must be 18 years or older and able to obtain required licensure through the New York State Gaming Commission

  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED

  • Must be available to work fully onsite from 5pm-10pm

  • Must possess a minimum of 1 year prior relevant experience within the racing industry (in live racing or track operations), in roles involving vehicle operation such as gate operations, race-day vehicle support, coordination with race officials, race-day safety procedures, or similar

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license

  • Must possess safe driving skills including the ability to steer precise turns with little or no corrections, make split second decisions and obey the instructions of the Starter while driving the mobile starting gate at speeds up to 30 mph or more while on the racetrack

Pay Rate:

The rate for this role is:

$25.00

Pay will not be below any applicable minimum wage.

Should overtime be worked, employees are paid overtime pay in accordance with state requirements.
