R&D Sr. Manager, Product Engineering Lab

Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Senior Director, R&D – Materials Science and Shared Services, the Senior Manager of the Product Engineering Lab provides strategic and operational leadership for product engineering laboratories supporting all Medical Delivery Solutions (MDS) platforms. This role oversees multiple labs globally across several sites ensuring that test capabilities, capacity, and compliance to enable world class product development, verification, and innovation. The Senior Manager drives operational excellence, continuous improvement, and predictable execution while partnering across R&D, Quality, Regulatory, and Operations to accelerate product development cycles.

Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership

  • Define and execute the long‑term strategy for the Product Engineering Lab network, aligning capabilities with MDS platform needs, capability roadmaps, and global R&D priorities.

  • Oversees MDS R&D product engineering labs in Brea, Salt Lake City, Franklin Lakes, and TCI.

  • Establish clear goals, performance indicators, and resource plans to deliver high‑quality data and technical insights that support predictable program execution.

Operational Excellence & Execution

  • Oversee all Product Engineering Lab locations, ensuring safety, regulatory compliance, and predictable execution of testing and engineering workflows.

  • Implement continuous improvement and Lean principles to enhance throughput, efficiency, and quality, supported by clear operational metrics and visual management.

  • Ensure robust data integrity, adherence to design control, and alignment with quality system expectations.

Cross‑Functional Collaboration

  • Partner across all MDS platforms and functions such as R&D, Quality, and Program Management to provide support throughout the product lifecycle.

  • Partner with R&D and Quality to optimize and modernize test methods, driving greater efficiency and maintaining compliance with evolving industry standards.

  • Align global lab resources with program priorities, balancing near‑term needs with long‑term capability development.

Talent Development & Culture

  • Attract, develop, and empower top talent. Foster a culture of operational excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement.

  • Implement talent development programs and succession planning to build long-term organizational capability.

Qualifications:

Education

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, or a related Engineering discipline.

Experience & Skills

  • 10+ years of experience in Research and Development

  • 3+ years of R&D Lab management experience, with a strong track record in operational excellence and continuous improvement.

  • Proven success in building a strong lab team and leading initiatives to drive lab efficiencies in medical device industry.

  • Deep knowledge of medical device regulations (FDA, ISO 13485), design control.

  • Expertise in product development is a strong plus.

  • Demonstrated ability to set strategic vision, manage large technical organizations, and drive operational efficiencies.

  • Strong communication, team member engagement, and organizational change skills.
