Job Duties

Norfolk State University’s Department of Facilities Management provides a campus environment that is conducive to working and learning, through systematic maintenance, repair, and renovation and construction of campus buildings, facilities, and infrastructure.

The department is currently seeking Building Maintenance Technicians.

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

1. Responsible for all general maintenance to Residential Life buildings and major mechanical systems.
2. Performs daily inspections of all Residential Life buildings and housing facilities on-campus such as: maintenance of residential buildings and occasional grounds maintenance.
3. Performs daily inspections of all residential life buildings, major mechanical systems to include HVAC, plumbing and minor electrical issues, perform and/or assist in preventative maintenance on all HVAC related systems.
4. Responds to work orders to make minor repairs to appliances but not limited to electric ranges, plumbing problems and refrigeration issues.
Performs minor building cosmetic repairs and furniture adjustments; responds to work orders to include light bulb changing, exit lights and replacement of air filters, carpentry, masonry, and painting.
5. Responds to move in and move out furniture adjustments.
6. Reviews and responds to work orders in a timely manner.
7. Ability to lift 51-75 pounds, unassisted; requires frequent walking, standing, and bending.
8.Ability to respond to emergencies, both before and after business hours.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Work requires knowledge equivalent to a high school diploma or GED or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in building maintenance repair, HVAC.
3. Skilled in the use of various tools, including power tools; masonry, carpeting, and painting equipment.
4. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Additional Considerations

Certification in building maintenance discipline, to include HVAC certification, etc.
