JOB OVERVIEW Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Market Coordinator.
Reporting to the (RA) Operational Effectiveness Supervisor, this position is responsible to develop and optimize generation plans, manage market transactions and risk, and support hydroelectric operations by coordinating forecasts, outage planning, and stakeholder communications to maximize the commercial value of OPG’s assets.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Develop day-ahead generation plans, optimize short-term assets and resources, analyze hedge transactions, and coordinate generator outage planning with consideration for transmission system impacts.
  • Support Hydrothermal Operations and Hydroelectric Plant Groups by consolidating generation forecasts, optimizing the commercial value of hydroelectric resources, and executing the Water Desk function.
  • Schedule and manage pre-committed physical transactions across control area boundaries, contribute to business planning, risk management, and maintain work manuals, policies, and procedures.
  • Produce and analyze integrated generation schedules and portfolio hedge transactions, manage surplus baseload generation (SBG), and communicate SBG control actions for implementation.
  • Conduct after-the-fact market analysis, develop short-term asset optimization plans, and coordinate generator outage plans, including negotiation and interface with Hydro One and the IESO.
  • Provide market-based support for hydro operational strategies, consolidate energy forecasts, and support regulatory and environmental discussions.
  • Ensure compliance with risk management policies, support contract management, optimize commodity delivery logistics, and identify new business opportunities in assigned markets.
  • Maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, generate reports, and communicate effectively with plant groups, IESO, ISO’s, Hydro One, and other partners.
  • Develop and manage data pipelines for after-the-fact analysis, forecasting, and reporting using Azure Data Factory
  • Build and optimize queries/code with Azure Data Explorer, Python, and Databricks
  • Create and maintain dashboards, tools, and reports using Power BI and Azure Data Explorer

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Requires a 4 year university degree in engineering, computer/data science or a related field, with strong knowledge of integrated power system operations, electrical theory, hydroelectric generation, water and reservoir management, relevant sciences, economics, business administration, and computer applications; must have excellent analytical and communication skills in English.
  • Practical experience with the Bulk Electricity System (BES), including market price impacts, volatility, and a solid understanding of both physical and financial energy markets, with specific knowledge of OPG’s market footprint.
  • Hands-on experience with commodities and business models for coal, oil, gas, and electricity traded products, as well as logistics management for natural gas and power.
  • Strong understanding and commitment to procedural safety, regulatory compliance, and outage management coordination, including transmission analysis, generation scheduling, and financial risk management.
  • In-depth knowledge of the IESO administered market and surrounding ISO markets, as well as market operations, offer stack implications, and commercial activities such as intelligence gathering and negotiation.
  • Demonstrated experience in hydroelectric generation, water resources and reservoir management, and the operational roles of integrated power systems, including the impact of hydroelectric generation on market operations and pricing.
  • Requires 6 to 8 years of relevant experience, demonstrating strong collaboration with colleagues and external partners, along with excellent attention to detail.
  • Advanced proficiency in PowerBI, Azure DevOps, Azure Data Factory, Python, Databricks, and KQL.
