Manager, Public Engagement

The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for a Manager, Public Engagement in the Learning and Engagement department. The Manager, Public Engagement works to advance adult programs at the Museum that foster new ideas and connections through the art of our time, providing new platforms and means to catalyze meaningful experiences with art. The Manager will conceive, co-conceive, and produce programs that include but are not limited to artmaking and writing, conversations, facilitated discussions, discursive programs, workshops, and performances with a focus on the power of art and artists to effect individual and social transformation. This position will manage and provide guidance to staff, including Associate and Assistant Educators, as part of a team to design, coordinate, implement, and facilitate adult programs at the Museum that provide impactful experiences, attract new audiences, and engender critical conversations. This position will report to and work closely with the Director, Public Engagement to identify and manage potential community-based partnerships that align to this work at the Museum, including strengthening and expanding academic partnerships with colleges and universities across the New York area.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • With Director, Public Engagement, develop and continually refine a strategic framework for the delivery of public programs at the Museum.
  • Lead the conceptualization, design, development, and implementation of an extensive portfolio of programs for adult visitors and intergenerational audiences, including lectures and talks, art/object making, artist programs, writing and reading groups, ensuring the highest quality of experience, creativity and innovation, and inclusiveness and accessibility.
  • Work closely with colleagues across the museum, in particular, curators, marketing and communications, and visitor experience to effectively and professionally deliver on divisional goals and institutional priorities.
  • Directly supervise Public Engagement staff, including Associate Educator, Assistant Educator, and Studio Museum Fellow in their execution of programs, both virtual and in person. Participates in recruitment for select open positions and makes hiring recommendations or decisions for staff vacancies; supervises assigned staff on daily basis, providing relevant training, feedback, guidance, professional development, etc.; ensures compliance with and comprehension of Museum policies and relevant collective bargaining agreement; manages the constructive discipline process, as warranted; conducts annual performance reviews with direct staff; etc.
  • Contribute to an ambitious, effective, and proactive team culture that supports the continued improvement of MoMA’s public programming and engagement strategies.
  • Navigate a fast-paced programming environment by making decisions and solving problems to support the needs of audiences, artists and staff.
  • Develop and cultivate an extensive network of higher learning institutions, creative communities, and community partners helping to advance collaborative programs that offer opportunities to strengthen and grow our work.
  • Monitor and evaluate MoMA adult programs with a view to updating, improving and refining offerings on a regular basis.
  • Analyze results of audience research and visitor demographics in strategizing on how to best serve the MoMA community.
  • Ensure operational excellence in processes and systems; establish operations that represent best practices and provide seamless experiences for the partner departments and audiences; evaluate existing processes and systems on an ongoing and regular basis to align with the changing needs.
  • Serve as a member of the Education senior leadership team, provide strategic input for cross-divisional engagement and decision-making, and build strong collaborative relationships with peers.
  • Provides monthly and other reports and statistics as requested, provides information and support for grant applications and advancement initiatives, and participates in institutional planning/initiatives.
  • Create budgets and track expenses, oversee ongoing financial operations and reporting, ensuring that the organization operates within budget and fiscal guidelines and policies.
  • Writes copy for brochures and website promotions.
  • Present and lead adult programs where necessary, interfacing with the public, including weekends and evenings, as necessary.
  • Maintain contact with the broader network of museum professionals through participating in conferences, professional networks, and organizations.
  • Perform any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.
