Highway I
General Purpose This is a position working in various activities within the Public Works operation. The individual will be involved in road maintenance, drainage, field maintenance, snow plowing, tree work, and other related duties.
Supervision Received Duties are performed under the direction of the Highway Leadman, Highway II, the Director or Assistant Director of Public Works, or their designee. Can and may be required to work independently.
Supervision Exercised May supervise laborer, or seasonal help.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities May operate a wide variety of equipment within the Public Works Department, including, but not limited to; backhoe, class 8 standard transmission truck, loader, bulldozer, grass cutting machines, street sweeper, excavator, and other related construction equipment. Works installing drainage systems, road preparation, road construction, field maintenance, parks maintenance, general maintenance and other related items. Perform other duties that may be assigned by Leadman, Public Works Director or Assistant Director, or their designee.
Desired Minimum Qualifications: High School or GED diploma required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge and use of equipment, such as, but not limited to, large and small trucks, backhoe, payloader, tractor, grader, rollers, trailers, chainsaws, shovels and rakes. Working knowledge of drainage systems, road construction maintenance, field and park maintenance, and tree work. Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
As a minimum, the employee must have a valid State of Connecticut CDL Class A license and be able to drive a standard transmission vehicle. The employee is subject to the FHWA drug/alcohol testing policy of the Town of North Branford.
Experience and Training 1-3 years of recent experience and training in the areas of roads, drainage and/or parks and fields maintenance.

While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is required to lift, walk, drive, push and pull, reach overhead, stoop, crouch, kneel, climb, sit and talk. The employee must be capable of lifting and carrying up to I00 pounds. The employee must be capable of driving a Class 8 standard transmission truck with plow, as well as smaller trucks. Specific vision abilities require close and distant vision, depth perception and the ability to focus.
Work Environment The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions, which are often adverse, both in the cold and heat. The employee will be required to work in storm conditions, rain, snow, sleet, and other conditions that may be present in New England. The employee frequently works near and with heavy equipment, trucks, and maintenance equipment.
