Associate Manager, Tax Information Reporting and Withholding

Ready to be pushed beyond what you think you’re capable of?

At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. It’s a massive, ambitious opportunity that demands the best of us, every day, as we build the emerging onchain platform — and with it, the future global financial system.

To achieve our mission, we’re seeking a very specific candidate. We want someone who is passionate about our mission and who believes in the power of crypto and blockchain technology to update the financial system. We want someone who is eager to leave their mark on the world, who relishes the pressure and privilege of working with high caliber colleagues, and who actively seeks feedback to keep leveling up. We want someone who will run towards, not away from, solving the company’s hardest problems.

Our work culture is intense and isn’t for everyone. But if you want to build the future alongside others who excel in their disciplines and expect the same from you, there’s no better place to be.

While many roles at Coinbase are remote-first, we are not remote-only. In-person participation is required throughout the year. Team and company-wide offsites are held multiple times annually to foster collaboration, connection, and alignment. Attendance is expected and fully supported.

The U.S. Withholding Tax Associate Manager will be an integral part of the Coinbase tax team, supporting the day-to-day operations of the U.S. withholding tax function, including backup withholding and nonresident alien (NRA) withholding. This role will focus on ensuring Coinbase's compliance with U.S. withholding tax requirements and collaborate cross-functionally with product, platform, and data teams to drive continuous process improvements.

The Coinbase tax team ensures full compliance with tax obligations across all jurisdictions in which Coinbase operates, including building world-class tax protocols for digital asset transactions. We are passionate about tax and crypto, and we are seeking a candidate with a similar passion and collaborative mindset to join our team.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Track and respond to IRS notices including B-notices, C-notices, and withholding tax assessments
  • Support withholding tax audits and tax authority requests
  • Research and analyze U.S. withholding tax developments and assess impact on Coinbase operations
  • Identify and implement improvements to withholding tax processes and procedures
  • Respond to inquiries from product, onboarding, and customer support teams regarding U.S. withholding tax requirements
  • Partner with product and data teams on system requirements and business rules for withholding tax processes
  • Support customer service teams through internal education and customer escalations related to withholding tax
  • Coordinate across departments including product, data analytics, onboarding, customer service, and communications

What we look for in you:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or similar field
  • 4-7+ years of experience in U.S. withholding tax, ideally with a bank, broker-dealer, large financial institution or multinational or Big 4
  • Strong technical knowledge of backup withholding (IRC Section 3406) and NRA withholding (IRC Sections 1441-1446)
  • Experience with U.S. withholding tax deposits, reconciliations, and filings (Form 945, Form 1042)
  • Familiarity with IRS notice processes, including B-notices and C-notices
  • Experience with withholding tax systems and tools
  • Experience with withholding tax system implementations or process automation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain withholding tax requirements to both tax and non-tax audiences
  • Strong attention to detail and process orientation
  • Collaborative mindset and positive attitude
  • Willingness to adapt and learn in a fast-paced environment

Nice to haves:

  • Experience with data analytics tools such as Snowflake, Looker, or similar platforms for withholding tax reconciliation and reporting
